Dealing with racism, and the effects of the racism-fuelled violence this summer

Signposting to a number of resources you may find helpful if you've been affected by recent racist violent action in the UK.

Recent events in the UK have led to many communities being impacted by racist actions.

These acts of violence against fellow members of our society are unnacceptable, and will be affecting the physical and mental health of many people.

Employers have a legal obligation to keep their employees safe, from physical and emotional harm, but freelancers have little in the way of protection.

If you've been affected by the recent events, there are a number of sources of support you can turn to.

These resources are not entirely freelance focused, but do provide support to those who need it.

Is your work being affected?

Being self-employed, it can often feel like we don't have much support when dealing with external challenges or pressures.

This can create feelings of guilt, anxiety, and even lead to poor health. It's important to take care of your own wellbeing, and your clients should take some of this responsibility.

Most clients will understand, and will want to support you.

If you feel your work is being affected:

1/ Speak to your client, and explain that you might need some extra time, support or space. Most clients will understand, and you can discuss an updated schedule or timing plan.

2/ Turn to your communities and support networks. Try not to face the feelings alone. If you don't already have a support network, consider looking at the resources above, and reaching out for help.

3/ Recognise the additional emotional distress may be causing you - it's okay to step away from work in order to process your emotions.

4/ If you're feeling fine, but want to support others - reach out to your network and check-in with your fellow freelancers. Ask how you might be able to support, but don't assume what someone needs or might find helpful.
