You must register for self-assessment by October 5th, if you have to send a tax return, and have not sent one before.

i.e. if you generated self-employed income between April 2023-April 2024, you must register for self-assessment by October 5th 2024.

Self-assessment is the process of reporting your income and expenses to HMRC, so you can ensure you’re paying the correct amount of tax.

If you don’t register for self-assessment if required, you may be subject to a fine and late payment penalties.

You only need to register once - you don’t need to register each time you start a new tax year.
