Start creating your own wellbeing plan

Taking care of your mental health and wellbeing is a critical part of being self-employed - after all, if you can't work, you don't have a business.

What

Start to understand what affects the mental health of the self-employed at large, along with your own wellbeing.

Put time aside to reflect on how you’re feeling, identify things which are causing you concern, and put healthy boundaries in place.

Why

Mental health matters more when you’re self-employed.

You are the most important asset in your business - so if you can’t work, neither can your business.

There’s no-one else in your business who is going to be taking care of your wellbeing, and there are many factors unique to being self-employed, which guides and resources on mental health at work simply don’t cover.

So be prepared, and building a wellbeing plan is essential.

How

1/ Read our introduction to why mental health matters more when you’re self-employed - so you understand its importance.

2/ Read our “15 things” handbook on taking care of yourself for freelancers, discover some of the key recommendations we make for taking care of yourself.

3/ Download the “freelancing wellbeing template”, and complete the actions to create your own wellbeing plan.

4/ Set an event in your calendar to review your mental health every week, every month and every quarter, to build up a picture of how you’re doing, and what changes you might like to make.

5/ Remember, you don’t need to do this alone - and there are many wonderful freelance-first communities who provide connection, resources and support.
