You’ll need to be completing a self-assessment tax return if you generated self-employed income for the last tax year.
Whilst most people will be completing their tax returns online, some people still complete a paper return. HMRC is slowly moving towards all self-assessment tax returns having to be submitted online as part of “Making Tax Digital”.
If you’re completing an online tax return, you’ll need to complete it before the end of January 31st.
Late filing and late payment can result in penalties, so it’s essential to keep these dates in your diary and be prepared ahead of the deadlines.
You can file your tax return at any time after the end of the tax year, and before the deadline - and it is sensible to get it completed and filed as early as possible.
If you’re unsure of how to complete your tax return, or this is the first time you’ve completed one, you may want to seek help from an accountant, or use an online service such as Crunch or Freeagent.
